Students of DUET placed 21-point demands
Ordinary students have been protesting in Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology-DUET for the past few days. On August 12 (Monday) when many resigned including VC, Pro VC, Registrar, administrative activities were disrupted. Due to this, teachers along with ordinary students had to face various complications.
In this context, on Sunday, August 18, the general students held a protest march on the campus and made 21-point demands based on their opinions.
The names of three teachers have been proposed as VC and Pro-VC instead of any incumbent in the previous administration (VC, Pro-VC, Registrar and Student Welfare Director) in the new administration. The teachers are Professor Dr. Arefin Kawsar, Professor Dr. Abu Taiyab, Professor Dr. Abdus Salam.
As registrar, they proposed any one among Professor Dr. Abdus Salam, Professor Dr. Abu Taiyab, Professor Dr. Kazi Rafiqul Islam. As Director of Student Welfare, any one among Professor Dr. Manowar Hossain, Professor Dr. Kazi Rafiqul Islam, Professor Dr. Utpal Kumar.
They also have some other demands like, holding students' council elections and ensuring drug-free campuses and cancellation of illegal seats in all halls and allotment of seats on the basis of merit/poverty have been demanded.
However, in the second phase, the students demanded release of a professor of Mechanical Engineering Department Dr. Mustafizur Rahman from all responsibilities. And in the third point, it is said that the activities of all political organizations, professional organizations or any other type of organ/shadow organization, legislative panel/council/committee, regional organization and any unregistered organization should be banned inside the university campus. This will apply to all students, teachers and officers and employees of the said university.
Besides, an ultimatum has been given to punish all those involved in the recruitment trade through a fair investigation of all the recruits approved in the latest syndicate and to fire the illegal and partisan recruits.
On the other hand, it has been proposed to punish those obstructing the latest anti-discrimination student movement with expulsion (minimum 1 year) and immediate cancellation of hall seats (minimum 2 years expulsion) for those who have taken students to the guest room or physically assaulted them in various ways in the past. In this regard, the students who have already completed their graduation or are enrolled in the master's program have raised a strong demand to cancel their studentship and certificate.
Similarly, the DSW office is reorganized with 100% DUETian teachers; It has been demanded that the students who have been discriminated against in the recruitment process should be appointed in a speedy time and the teachers who have been discriminated against should be brought back quickly and DUETian recruitment should be done on a priority basis in the recruitment of teachers and Masters should not be made compulsory in the recruitment of teachers.
The rest of the demands include-
11. The activities of the extended second campus should be started quickly and the name of the hall should be decided based on the opinion of the students and the mosque should be arranged in the second campus.
12. Ensuring the quality of education through teacher evaluation by students and selecting student-friendly teachers in assigning the provost's responsibility.
13. TA/RA fellowship for Masters is minimum Tk. 20000.
14. Libraries, transport facilities and medical services should be improved.
15. University clubs have to ensure allocation of rooms and annual operating budget.
16. The corruption of past development projects should be investigated and the accused should be brought under the law and punished subject to proof.
17. The academic calendar should be formulated and implemented in coordination with student representatives (Student Council and CR Forum).
18. A substantial budget should be earmarked for research-oriented work in the annual budget.
19. Harassment in the name of clearance must stop. In this case, the clearance process has to be completed digitally.
20. Encoding will be arranged in the test book.
21. Teachers should play a role in forming university alumni.
These decisions were taken by the general students of DUET by organizing a discussion meeting in DUET Auditorium.
